The other day, on my way home from work, I stopped at the store to get some “surprises” for my kids. Although they frequently ask, I don’t do this very often, but I had just finished a three day weekend marathon, and an extra-day teaching. They hadn’t seen me much and I was feeling a little generous.
My Smiling Son loves the movie Cars and each of the characters – especially Mater. I’ve been keeping my eye out for a smaller, inexpensive, non-talking version of Mater. On Monday I found one. To keep the balance, I looked for something equally inexpensive for my Darling Daughter. Unfortunately, the selection for little girls toys are very limited. However, I found her a poster to color – and it didn’t have any princesses, fairies, or Barbies. It was just a couple of cute puppies.
When I gave the toy Mater to my son, he was giddy. He skipped, and hopped, and whooped for joy. I dont’ think I’ve ever seen him this excited for any gift ever. He was absolutely thrilled. My daughter was more mellow, but later came up to me with the sweetest smile and with aerious sincerity said, “Dad… this is the best gift in the whole world!”
Every once in awhile, we Dad’s get it right.
“So if you people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.” ~Jesus
