Winning, not Whining

He wants to serve and protect his family, provide for their needs, and help them navigate the journey of life. But sometimes, in the course of life, we get beat up, beat down, or just plain beaten. And interestingly, life doesn’t stop, just because we need some time to recover.
How does a man continue to provide for his family, while hiding in the Cave of Adullum and seeking asylum?
I first discovered this song last Fall. It really called out to me and articulated the vision I want to fulfill in my life. I know my Wonderful Wife would love me to live out this vision too. The other morning, on my way home from work, this song came on the radio just before I got home.

Looking, or Seeing?

I tend not to remember people, names, or faces. I figured out a long time ago that it’s because I’m not really a detail person. I catch the greater gestalt of a person, but not their finer details. I see the big picture, but not the details. I see the forest, but rarely take the time to see the trees.
While we may need big picture people in the world, people certainly appreciate when we pay attention to them. Well, I know I do – and I’ve learned that others do too. Remembering a person’s name and face is one of the greatest compliments we can give them. I need to better in this arena.
“Of course I love him. But do I see him as an individual, a real-life, person – of his own right?”

If you know an older person with a dog, you have had a glimpse of unconditional – if not unhealthy – love.
Often these dogs are small, obnoxious, and very noisy. Sometimes they are fat, un-groomed, and have serious halitosis. For most of us, we really don’t want anything to do with these smelly little creatures.
However, for the loved ones in our lives, these animals are their heart and soul. If you don’t show love and affection to these beasts, you have committed the unpardonable sin. You might as well stab them in the heart with a dull knife – it would hurt them less. Read the rest of this entry »
