@Peat, I like the way your mind works. Yes, you're right, that is the "nugget." I probably could have said it in fewer than 18 pages, but so could our presenter have done it in less than 8 hours of presentation.

But, as is always the case, the stories really make the point. She had video tape of convicted offenders, and a lot of personal anecdotes from her 30 year history.

I have some info that she shared about the offenders, I'll try to find time to write another post in the next few days with some of that.

I'm working on getting her out to Columbia County - make it a community event. In addition, I've asked her if I could be trained to make these presentations. She sounded optimistic about that.

@steffan, Thanks for the reply. Yes, the number of cases with female offenders is growing. The women, apparently, are more likely to be cruel. I'll search the handouts for the exact data. (I have a printout of over 60 PowerPoint slides)

I hope to write a follow up post on this shortly.

Thanks for the comments!

What statistics are available on abuse of children by women ? It seems from the news reports we get that this is going to be the next big problem we have to deal with. Just as you mention above how the perpetrator thinks he might be doing "good" I have heard in many cases in which the women was the perpetrator that "she really loves the child", etc.

I think this is the real nugget here: "... the best prevention is parent education ... abusers steer clear of groups that participate in this sort of education."

It sounds like the most valuable protection is the awareness of awareness -- that if potential offenders are aware that other members of their social circle are educated on the subject, they are less likely to act.

It looks like Justice Department statistics back this up -- sexual assault and related crime rates are falling per capita, while reporting is rising, roughly mirroring public awareness campaigns over the last 25 years.

What those statistics don't provide is insight into the individuals. I'm interested in learning more of the specifics -- not about the victims and their experiences, but about the psychology and behavior of the offenders. Can you provide more links to other constructive resources?
